Volunteering

From staffing information desks and the gift shop, to escorting patients to and from various hospital departments, our volunteers are an important part of our team. The Memorial Hospital and Manor Auxiliary is a group of men and women who share their time to direct visitors, answer inquiries, help customers in the gift shop, and assist patients. They donate thousands of hours of service to help where they are needed most.

The Memorial Hospital Chaplains are volunteer clergy who are always just a phone call away in times of crisis or concern. Chaplains serve on a "call" basis and are available through the hospital operator.

Who Can Volunteer

Any adult or student age 16 and older may volunteer at Memorial Hospital and Manor. Volunteers are asked to work one, three-hour shift each week. Applicants should be dependable, responsible, and friendly. Volunteers must adhere to the policies and procedures of Memorial Hospital and Manor.

How To Volunteer

All volunteers in the Auxiliary, the Manor or the Chaplains group are required to participate in Memorial Hospital and Manor's application process. Adults 18 years and older may apply to participate in the adult volunteer program by completing an application with the Human Resources Department. Part of the application process involves submitting to a criminal background check, drug screen, and special training on hospital policies. After the application process is complete, the Volunteer Services department will schedule training in your area of interest. After appropriate training is completed, volunteers are asked to serve one shift (3 hours) per week, if possible. Student volunteers who are at least 16 years old may apply to volunteer with the Memorial Hospital and Manor Student Auxiliary. After an interview process, a limited number of students will be selected by the Auxiliary. Please contact the Director of Volunteer Services at (229) 243-6187 for more information.

Memorial Hospital and Manor Auxiliary Scholarship

The Memorial Hospital and Manor Auxiliary sponsors a Scholarship Program to make scholarships available to persons pursuing an education in health related fields who plan to work at Memorial Hospital and Manor following completion of their courses. Three $500 scholarships are available to applicants of Decatur, Grady, Miller, Mitchell and Seminole Counties. Individuals of any age who have been accepted (or anticipate acceptance) in an accredited school will be considered. The deadline for application is June 30th of each year. History

The American Red Cross Volunteer Group was organized in 1960 when Memorial Hospital and Manor opened. This group served as the welcoming committee for patients and visitors for many years. They also assisted hospital staff with health fairs and other special events. Although they were affectionately known as the "Grayladies," a few dedicated men joined the group and helped wherever they were needed.

The Memorial Hospital and Manor Auxiliary was established in 1998 when the Kirbo Women's Center and Gift Shop opened. Originally the Auxiliary's main focus was to operate the hospital's Gift Shop. They also host fundraising events and a special "Tree of Lights" program at Christmas. The Auxiliary uses these proceeds to award scholarships to deserving students pursuing an education in various areas of healthcare. The Auxiliary also provides funding for special projects in the hospital and Manor.

The Auxiliary and the American Red Cross Volunteers consolidated in June 2006, to form a united group of volunteers to serve in different areas of the hospital and nursing home. The Auxiliary has approximately 70 members serving Memorial Hospital and Manor and is a member of the Council on Auxiliaries / Volunteers of the Georgia Hospital Association. A Student Auxiliary was added in 2007 to give students an opportunity to serve their community by helping patients and visitors at Memorial Hospital and Manor.
